Spiked Mexican Hot Chocolate

Recipe By: Cotter Crunch
🍫🌶️ Fun Fact: Mexican hot chocolate dates back to the Aztecs, who drank cacao with chili and spices, believing it boosted energy, strength, and was a gift from the gods.

🌶️ What You’ll Need

5 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk
2 ½ cups canned coconut cream or canned coconut milk
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate bar, chopped
4 ounces dark baking chocolate bar or semi sweet baking chocolate (dairy free if needed), chopped
½ Tablespoon cinnamon
2 cinnamon sticks (optional)
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¾ to 1 teaspoon chili powder (see notes)
2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
½ to ⅔ cup maple syrup or to taste (see notes)
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ cup tequila gold and chocolate liquor, optional (see notes)
Toasted marshmallows

🔥 How To Make The Magic

1️⃣ Set the stage: Toss everything into the slow cooker except the tequila, chocolate liqueur, and toppings. Whisk it up until smooth and ready to party.

2️⃣ Turn up the heat: Cook on HIGH for 1 hour, stirring often. After that hour, pull out the cinnamon sticks, give it a good stir, then drop it to LOW for 1–2 more hours until silky, melted perfection.

3️⃣ Spike it: Stir in the tequila and chocolate liqueur (optional… but highly encouraged), then switch the slow cooker to WARM.

4️⃣ Top it off: Pour into mugs and finish with toasted marshmallows. Extra cozy. Extra spicy. 🌶️🍫

Recipe Notes

🌶️ Turn Up the Heat:
Craving extra spice? Swap regular chili powder for a 50/50 chili powder + cayenne blend. Respect the cayenne. It bites back.

🍫 Boozy Business:
If you’re spiking it, gold tequila is the move. Smoother, warmer, and plays real nice with chocolate and spice. Add a pinch of sea salt right before serving to wake everything up.

🍫🥃 Chocolate Liqueur Tips:
Chocolate liqueurs like Godiva or Mozart run sweet, so ease up on the sugar if you’re adding them. Always stir liqueur in at the end for max flavor.

🔥 How Much to Pour:
• ½ cup (4 oz): subtle kick, cozy vibes
• ¾ cup (6 oz): balanced richness with boozy warmth

Sip smart. Sip spicy. 🌶️🍫

They’re culture. They’re history. They’re a destination.
And yes, they’re also an excellent excuse for hot sauce.
